New York greeted its more than 43,000 marathon starters with a brilliantly sunny, if a bit brisk, Sunday morning that dawned with temperatures in the 30s. It was the perfect setting for a race expected to be bigger than ever — and headlined by the biggest name in distance running, Haile Gebrselassie, the world record holder. But also back is defending champion Meb Keflezighi, who last year became the first American to win the New York City Marathon since 1982.
The women’s race is missing some of the sport’s bigger names, but features American Shalane Flanagan making her marathon debut and the legendary Derartu Tulu of Ethiopia
